25 of the Best Picnic Food Ideas for Kids

July 13, 2017 by Ciara Attwell, Updated July 8, 2025

25 easy and healthy picnic food ideas to take out and about with the kids this summer!

As the school summer holidays loom here in the U.K., my thoughts have turned to planning days out with the kids and figuring how I’m going to entertain them for 6 weeks.

With said days out planned, I then start to tot up the cost and soon realise that days out with children can be really expensive.

On top of any entrance fees you might have to pay, you then have to add on lunch, drinks, treats and snacks.

So this summer where possible, I plan to take picnics on our days out to save some money.

Check out our favourite Picnic Food Ideas For Kids!

Chicken Sausage Rolls

Chicken Sausage rolls in a stainless steel lunchbox with chopped fruit and veg, breadsticks and cheese.

Delicious sausage rolls made easy with just five ingredients including chicken sausages and tortilla wraps. No pastry needed!

Pizza Pasta Salad

Pizza Pasta Salad in a square blue tupperware pot on a white background.

A delicious and super easy pizza flavoured pasta salad recipe. Ready in less than 15 minutes and perfect for lunch boxes, picnics and BBQ’s this summer!

Chicken & Cheese Lunchbox Muffins

Savoury muffins are such a brilliant alternative to sandwiches for picnics. There’s nothing wrong with a simple ham or cheese sandwich of course, but it’s nice to have something different every now and then.

Mini Chocolate Spinach Muffins

Delicious bite sized chocolate mini muffins packed with hidden spinach! Brilliant as a snack for kids or to add to lunchboxes.

Healthier Chocolate Chip Cookies

These cookies are made with wholemeal flour and rolled oats which provide slow-releasing carbs that help keep the kids full until dinnertime.

Mini Lemon Muffins

If you’re looking for snacks you can batch make for picnics with the kids, then these Mini Lemon Muffins are an absolute must-try!

Ham & Cheese Roll Ups

Ham & Cheese Puff Pastry Roll Ups stacked on a sheet of parchment paper on top of a red and white striped tea towel.

Delicious Ham & Cheese Roll Ups made with shop bought puff pastry to make life easier! These are great hot, but are just as delicious packed up and eaten cold for a picnic lunch on days out.

Sausage & Veg Skewers

Sausage and veg skewers on mini food skewers for kids from pick plates, with mini breadsticks, chopped strawberries, blueberries and mini biscuits.

A simple but fun picnic idea for kids ready in just 5 minutes, using cocktail sausages and vegetables!

Lunchbox Spanish Omelette

Lunchbox Spanish Omelette cut into triangles and stored in a pink tupperware box with a small blue ramekin of crudites in the background.

You could keep the Spanish Omelette warm in a thermos lunch container but I actually prefer it cold. It holds together much better when its cold making it the perfect finger food!

Healthy Strawberry Banana Bread

A loaf of strawberry banana bread that has been sliced and topped with fresh chopped strawberries.

As breads or cakes go this is honestly so easy to make. You don’t need any special equipment or even a mixer. It’s all mixed by hand so it’s the perfect recipe to get your kids involved in helping with!

No Bake Cornflake Bars

No Bake Cornflake Bars cut into rectangles and served on a white plate with a brown rim.

Made with just a few simple ingredients these No Bake Cornflake Bars are the perfect afternoon snack for kids.

Blueberry Blender Muffins

Muffins are always a great addition to a picnic and these Blueberry Blender Muffins are not only much cheaper than shop bought, they are also incredibly easy to make at home!

Cheesy Puff Pastry Straws garnished with basil and grated parmesan on a white marble chopping board.

These cheesy pesto straws are always super popular with kids and adults alike. And they are so easy to make a big batch of using just a few simple ingredients!
