Baby Weaning Pancakes – 3 Ingredients

November 20, 2017 by Ciara Attwell, Updated December 17, 2024

Jump To Recipe Print Recipe

Easy pancakes made with just three ingredients – oats, eggs and banana. Ideal for baby led weaning and finger food for toddlers.

Green plate with oat pancakes, fruit and yogurt

A couple of years ago I shared this recipe for 2 Ingredient Baby Weaning Pancakes which has now probably become one of my most popular recipes to date.

To be honest I feel like a bit of a fraud calling it a recipe when it literally just involves mashed banana and egg but I guess it’s the simplicity that makes it so popular!

So I decided to make another version, this time with three ingredients. I included oats in this recipe which makes the pancakes a bit more substantial and filling.

Oats are a great source of fibre and slow releasing complex carbs which will help to fill little tummies up.

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 medium ripe banana
  • 1 medium egg
  • 25g / ¼ cup oats
Blue plate with a banana, an egg and oats

First up mash the banana in a bowl and then mix in the egg.

Blue bowl with mashed banana and egg

Next add in the oats and mix them in too.

Blue bowl with egg and oats

Heat a little coconut oil or butter in a large frying pan and then add the pancake mixture.

Use 1.5 tablespoon of the mixture to make one pancake and you will be able to make 5 pancakes in total.

Frying pan with 5 pancakes

Tips for making these Pancakes

1. I use normal porridge or rolled oats in this recipe. I’m pretty sure quick oats will work too but let me know for sure if you try it.

2. If your child doesn’t like a lot of texture in their food you can blitz the oats in a blender or food processor first. This will make the batter much finer without obvious bits of oats.

3. If you would like to add more flavour to these pancakes a dash of vanilla extract tastes really nice. You can also add some finely chopped berries – strawberries, raspberries and blueberries taste delicious.

Close up of baby led weaning pancakes on a green plate

These pancakes are ideal for baby led weaning as they are soft to eat and really easy for babies to pick up with their hands.

They also make great finger food for older babies and toddlers too. I think these pancakes make a really healthy and delicious breakfast but can be served any time of the day.

Storing & Freezing

These pancakes can also be made ahead of time and kept in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 48 hours. To reheat, fry them gently again in a frying pan or warm in the microwave.

They can also be frozen. Stack them with a layer of parchment paper between them so they don’t stick. Leave out for a few hours to defrost and then reheat as above.

If you try my  recipe please do leave me a comment and a star rating below. You can also share your pictures with me on on Instagram, Facebook or Twitter.  I always love to see your creations!

Thank you so much for this easy healthy recipe. Trying to find a pancake mix for my soon to be one year old that didn’t come with salt or sugar felt impossible today but luckily I found this and made them for him today and he loves them. I grinned the oats to give it more of a cleaner pancake look and texture and it came out perfect.

Hhmmm my kids gave the no go on this…. I think it was the rolled oats and the texture. I think I will try as others have in the comments here and blend the oats first to make a flour. Otherwise if I can get then to like it I loved the ease of this recipe. Minimal clean up too which is nice. I think the kids will stay relatively clean eating this on a busy morning when you just have time to wipe the floors, tables, and the kids up every meal time 🤪 I’ll reply if it works out for us after a 2nd go!

I’ve tried these type of banana pancakes before & they failed. These were great & my 9month old who hasn’t been eating, ate 4! My batter was liquid-y & I added 1 blackberry but this resulted in a soft delicious pancake other than the more firmer ones I’ve tried before

Amazing recipe – worked perfectly, so easy, and super tasty! I blitzed the quick oats into flour as our bub is only 7months old and still getting the hang of textures. I also made them a little smaller so they held together well and I have twice the amount! Now the trick will be to resist eating them myself so I can freeze them for her.

Instead of regular oat meal I added oat meal baby cereal which is a lot finer, dash of cinnamon, few drops of vanilla, they came out perfect I know a lot of you said they were falling apart but mine did not. I cooked them on the lowest setting it took quite some time for them to get golden brown on each side but I was just patient with them.

Made these for the first time this morning and they worked out great! I adjusted the proportions slightly as I only had a large egg, and added a bit of formula powder per an earlier comment. I made sure the mixture was thick enough. I used quick oats because that is what we had. I also added some cinnamon. They cooked on a cast iron well for me, but I watched them carefully, and made them small per the directions. Served with berries, yogurt, and peanut butter and they were a hit with my 1 year old! Thank you so much! Fun Saturday morning pancake recipe!

I made these for my 9 month old. I added a scoop of formula & some almond milk. You need to make the batter quite thick to allow them to flip. Even then, they were breaking apart in my pan. Dashes of cinnamon & splash of vanilla – nice flavor. Will make again but curious if anyone knew time & temp for baking? TIA

I made these this morning for my 8 month old and she loved them! Thank you for the recipe, I feel like we get stuck in an oatmeal rut because it’s simple, but these were pretty easy! I used quick cook oats and I think that helped them not be in such large chunks as regular oats would have been. It also took eyeballing the oat portions because the batter was really runny at first. I think the size of banana and egg really makes a difference in how many oats you need. I heated up a nonstick skillet for a while on medium to make sure it was hot (as if I was making regular pancakes), put some butter in to melt, and made 6 small pancakes out of this batter. They took wayyy longer than 2 minutes per side and I had to turn the burner down from medium a tad bit to keep them from burning. They took 4-5 minutes on each side to cook all the way through, which isn’t fast when you have a hungry baby, but they worked out! They were a little oily so I might cut the amount of butter I use next time, but I’m worried they will burn. Thanks for the recipe again!

I decided to bake this recipe. So I had some puree and baby cereal. I put a layer over puree in the bottom of my mini muffin tins and then put the batter using the cereal on top instead of oatmeal (like you would an upside down cake) and baked them at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. They didn’t really turn out like upside down cake but the puree did absorb and you could take the fruit. Turned out great.

Bummed. I was really excited about this recipe and it smelled amazing… but they wouldn’t cook enough to flip, fell apart and then burned really fast. I had to throw out the wasted ingredients and still feed an impatient hungry toddler.

Sounds like you had the pan on too hot

You can try to bake them if frying in pan doesn’t work for you. I also have the problem with frying pancakes, that’s why I mostly bake them 😉

This recipe is so easy and has been my go to breakfast for my 1 year old since we started BLW. I usually serve these with some yogurt and fruit and my lil guy just gobbles them up! Thanks for sharing this recipe!

These didn’t work for me. They came out ok but kept crumbling in my 6 month old’s hand before she could even get anything to get mouth.
Maybe pancake is too early for her. She does very well with holding fruits and vegetables that I have given her so far. So not sure what I did wrong when cooking them

This was a big hit with my 10 month old. We have recently transitioned from purees to BLW and I was having trouble coming up with different recipes but this will definitely be in rotation for his breakfast. I served with Greek yogurt as shown and a handful of blueberries. There was a few left over that I had for breakfast which is always nice when I don’t have to fuss and can eat whatever he’s eating. Thank you!!!

My LO is allergic to egg. What could I use as a substitute?

This recipe very much centres around eggs so I wouldn’t be able to offer a substitute. However there are a lot of healthy egg free recipes out there. A quick search on google should help.

I used Greek yogurt instead of egg- came out a little soft so I might need to adjust the ratio but still worked

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe! It’s become a firm favourite with my 10 month old. We’ve adapted it quite a bit, sometimes adding another mashed up fruit into the mix like blueberries or raspberries. Also tried it with added sweet potato which is also yum! Just add a few more oats or another egg to keep the same consistency. She also loves dipping them in yogurt. Thumbs up all round!

My 9 month old loves these. I used baby oatmeal, and I added some peanut powder. They fell apart when I first attempted to cook them, so I turned down the heat and made them very small (~ 1.5 inch diameter) and they were great! Baby was panting and grunting between bites he was so excited!

These didn’t work for me at all 🙁 I don’t know what I did wrong. They burned on the bottom and fell apart when I flipped them. I tried different heats, different sizes of pancakes, and 2 different pans. So sad, I was excited for my kids to try these! Any idea where I went wrong?

Definitely on too high a heat. They should never burn like that. Also, bananas and eggs can vary in size so maybe add more oats if the mixture is looking too runny.

Lovely recipe – so easy and always convenient. The oats will also provide a lot of fiber and some fresh strawberries always go down well
