The ultimate quick and easy comfort food recipe, perfect for a mid week family meal. Sausages, carrots and red onion, topped with mashed potato and cheese and baked in the oven.

Sausage pie just out of the oven, served in a large, white rectangle oven proof dish.

Sausages and mash has to be the best comfort food out there. But put them together in a dish with gravy and I promise you it takes it to the next level!

There’s nothing fancy about this sausage pie recipe. Just good old fashioned filling food that the whole family will enjoy.

Sausage and mash pie served on a white round dinner plate and garnished with green peas.

How To Make Sausage Pie

Start by frying some sausages in a pan with a little oil.

Then cut them into 3 or 4 pieces each. If you have toddlers or young children cut them into spears and sausages can be a choking hazard.

Sausages frying off in a pan, until golden brown.

In the same pan that you cooked the sausages, add red onion and carrots.

Fry for a couple of minutes before adding water and gravy granules, cooking until the gravy has thickened.

Carrots and onions added to frying pan.

Add everything you have made so far into a baking dish.

All the cooked ingredients added to a large oven proof dish.

Then top with mashed potato and grated cheddar cheese.

I used pre-made mashed potato just to make this a bit quicker and easier for a mid-week meal.

But feel free to make your own mash too.

Sausage pie topped with lots of mashed potato and cheese.

Bake for 25 minutes and it’s ready to serve up.

Filling and delicious, I hope this will be a new family favourite in your house.

Ingredient Substitutions

Sausages – I used pork sausages in this recipe but any type of sausages will work perfectly; chicken, turkey or veggie.

Gravy – I used beef gravy granules but again other types of gravy granules is fine too.

Veggies – I kept this recipe simple with just red onion and carrots but you could also add chopped celery, mushrooms, courgettes etc.

Looking forward to making this for my grandchildren, l have tried this with a cheese sauce but for some reason never thought of using gravy. I do like a teaspoon of mustard in my mash though
